love, winter |
A series of big (4'x6') acrylics on paper, I completed the winter element of this series in February 2009. I showed these pieces in two shows-- one at CCV's atrium (aka the Cherry Pit) in Burlington, VT and the other at Seminary Art Center in Waterbury, VT. Check out an excerpt from my artist statement below to get a closer glimpse at the intentions and process behind this work. |
These larger-than life paintings are imaginings from my split second observations— I see these quiet winter offerings, make a little memory file (click/snap). Sometimes I take pictures (they last longer). Sometimes I just keep peeking out my shrink-wrapped studio window as I paint. Sometimes I remember the line energy of a pine frond by trying to match that shape with my body (forever anthropomorphizing, yes). The landscape all around me is dancing. Sure. Some features pop-and-lock. Some foxtrot, some invent fancy figure skated footwork, some strut, some fly, some just stay still. Referencing these click/snaps, I imagine a host of plucky ladies with impossible proportions frolicking in the snow, embodying the landscape’s energy, its impeccable sense of style, disregarding the temperature (it’s always 98.6° in here baby!), finding sustenance in the bounty of beauty. These ladies’ response to a quiet blanketed richness is playful wonderment. |
